Resources for Teachers

Teachers, did you know the library has special Teacher Library Cards for educators working in private or public schools and childcare facilities in the city of Dubuque? So long as they are intended for classroom use, they allow up to 30 books to be checked out at a time, and have an extended loan period of six weeks.

Materials Request Form – Educators with a Teacher Card may request assistance for finding books to support curriculum topics. Then a Youth Services Librarian will compile up to 5 books per topic, check them out to your teacher card within 3 days, and hold them for pick up.

Field Trips & Library Tours

The Youth Services Department conducts tours for daycares, schools, scout troops, and others. Tours for preschool to 2nd grade may include a storytime. Conversely tours for older children will focus on how to use the library and its resources. This service can be tailored to fit the needs of your group. Teachers can call 563-589-4225, ext. 2237 or send an email to ebartley@carnegiestout.org for more information or to schedule a tour.

Classroom & Virtual Storytimes

Teachers can now request classroom visits to private and public schools and childcare facilities within the city of Dubuque. Let us help your students find the joy of reading while making connections to literacy skills and standards.

  • Preschool to Kindergarten – Talk, Sing, Read, Write, Play

These storytimes use the five early literacy practices to increase vocabulary and decoding skills while having fun. Themes could include farm, zoo, colors, shapes, animals… you name it!

  • Kindergarten to 2nd Grade – Literature Connections

We will choose a special read aloud book that is age appropriate and correlates to state standards. To finish, we will have a student activity designed to make a real world connection to the chosen text.

  • 3rd to 5th Grade – Lifelong Learning

We offer Book Talks to share new or unfamiliar books and formats with students and get them excited to read. Library use, research, and critical thinking lessons are also available.
