Meet the C-SPL August 2023 Reader of the Month: Kathryn Garrison!

About Reader of the Month Kathryn:

Hi!! I am a working mom who rediscovered my love of reading during COVID and haven’t stopped since. I read fantasy with some romance in it as it’s the best form of escapism.

I always joke that a book needs swords and dragons in order for me to read it. I LOVE fantasy and while not every book I have read has dragons (unfortunately), most are fantasy. I am a sucker for crazy world building and magic and castles!

Reader of the Month Q & A:

Q. What book(s) are you currently reading?

A.  “The Color of Dragons” by R.A. Salvatore and Erika Lewis.

Q. What is the best book you have read within the last year (or ever)?

A. That’s a tough one! I have two….I just finished “Fourth Ring” by Rebecca Yarros, which was amazing, but the book “A Court of Thorns and Roses” is the reason I got back into reading.

Q. What is your ideal reading environment (location, sound, snacks, etc.)?

A. I love playing some instrumental music and sitting somewhere comfortable, usually the couch or bed.

Q. What book are you most excited about reading next, and what about it is most exciting?

A. I am really excited for “Iron Flame” by Rebecca Yarros (releases in November) and “Crescent City 3” by Sarah J. Maas, which won’t be here till January 2024.

Q. Have you discovered any exciting new authors or genres?

A. Yes! I tend to find some indie authors through TikTok. Two of those were Luna Laurier and HR March. Both have amazing books with suspenseful plots and deep character connections. I love discovering new authors who were avid readers at one point.

Q. When do you decide to stop reading a book? In other words, do you read every book to the last page, or is there a moment when you decide to stop?

A. I get very emotionally tied to characters and their relationships with each other. I love reading romance books so that relationships need to be healthy. I read a book where the relationship just didn’t make sense to me and was almost toxic, so I stopped reading it.

Q. Do you remember when your love for reading began?

A. Yes! I have always loved reading when I was younger, but when I went off to college I could never find a book that kept my interest. During COVID, I decide to download this weird app called TikTok and discovered BookTok. Soooo many women were talking about this book series called “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” I decided to pick it up and read the entire series in a month! I haven’t stopped since and always look to BookTok for recommendations.
