Meet the C-SPL June 2025 Reader of the Month, Maggie Voorhees!

Hello! My name is Maggie Voorhees, I am a high school English teacher, and I love to read. Most of the time you can find me with a book and a chai in my hand!

C-SPL May 2025 Reader of the Month Q & A:

Q: What book(s) are you currently reading?

A: “The Let Them Theory” by Mel Robbins and “The Wedding People” by Alison Espach.

Q: What is the best book you have read within the last year (or ever)?

A: “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig. This book made me think long and hard about my life and the decisions I have made that have gotten me to the where I am today.

Q: What is your ideal reading environment (location, sound, snacks, etc.)?

A: Snowing outside, in my comfy chair, a fuzzy blanket and my cat, Judah, on my lap, a cup of coffee, and soft acoustic music quietly in the background.

Q: What book are you most excited about reading next, and what about it is exciting?

A: I am super excited to read “The Women” by Kristin Hannah. I recently read “The Nightingale” and really enjoyed her storytelling and the way her writing flows. It is also a topic that I am interested in exploring further.

Q: Can you tell us about your reading interests in general?

A: My favorite genres are romance, and psychological thrillers. I love the “who dun it?” kind of books that leave me guessing. Even though my mom likes to poke fun at me for always trying to guess the ending in the first half of the book. I believe that reading is such a fulfilling hobby, not only is it stimulating, it can also provide a temporary break from reality. Why worry about my problems when I can focus on some fictional characters’ problems? I also like, and believe, that reading can be whatever you want it to be, if you like smutty mafia romance, read it. If you like deep historical fiction books, read them. If you get excited to read non-fiction, keep reading it. Reading should be judgement-free, and something you are excited about.

Q: What format do you prefer and why (physical book, ebook, audiobook)?

A: I always thought I was strictly a physical book girly, however I love my Kindle. It is so convenient to bring literally anywhere and for some reason I feel like I read faster on it. However I LOVE having physical copies of books. I hope to someday have a library in my house and hope to keep Ikea in business just through buying their bookshelves.

Q: Have you read any books recently that changed the way you think about something?

A: “The Midnight Library” left me reflecting on my life for a long time. It reminded me of the butterfly effect, how one single choice can impact the trajectory of your life. The book had me crying by the end, and I could not recommend it more.

Q: Do you remember when your love for reading began?

A: I have always loved to read. My mom always has a book in her hands and so reading was the norm. I have vivid memories of her always reading to me; specifically I remember her reading “Twilight” to me before bed. As most teenagers do, I went through phases where I would read a lot for a few months and then I wouldn’t read for months. Once COVID hit, that is when I started consistently reading and tracking what I was reading. Now it has become a major aspect of my life!
