Music formats have come and gone over the years—8-track tapes in the 60s and 70s, cassette tapes in the 80s, CDs in the 90s, and MP3s in the 2000s. But vinyl records, which came on the scene in the 1950s, have been a mainstay despite fluctuating popularity over the years.
Vinyl records made a major comeback in the early 2000s. And by 2023, vinyl was considered the most popular physical music format in the United States. Now, thanks to librarians Ben and Amy, the library has its own collection of vinyl records available for checkout!

Librarian Ben is somewhat of a music aficionado. He leads a series of adult ukulele lessons, organizes the Music @Your Library concerts, and manages the musical instruments collection.
Ben worked with fellow librarian and manager Amy to get a records collection started. Based on feedback and interactions with the public, they knew people would appreciate the chance to borrow vinyl records from the library rather than personally investing in what could easily become a costly listening habit.
The record collection features a wide range of music that includes classic rock, pop, instrumental, rap, and more. And to make the vinyl listening experience even more accessible, there are portable record players available to borrow as well.
From live library concerts to albums and instruments you can borrow, there are so many ways to amplify your love of music at Carnegie-Stout Public Library!
