Ever wonder how the Makers on Etsy get perfect laser cutting and engraving projects every time?  Their secret is a hobby laser, a fairly expensive piece of equipment not available to the average person. Luckily for Dubuque, the Maker Space at Carnegie-Stout has a laser engraver available to everyone.

What is it?

The concept of using a laser cutter my seem daunting, but hereā€™s what those Makers donā€™t want you to know: the actual engraving time is pretty quick and also pretty easy.Ā All you need is a bit of imagination, creativity, and of course, access to a laser engraver. (And maybe some help from the Maker Space staff.)

Say hello to the Muse hobby laser from the company Full Spectrum Laser.Ā The Muse uses a 45 watt laser tube and software that connects to any computer or mobile device to allow you to use images to create amazing projects.Ā Image files include jpeg, png, pdf or any svg file.

Materials

Cut or engrave on wood, metal, glass and even leather to create custom cutting boards, glassware, ornaments, and more. Just be aware that our hobby laser cannot cut or engrave on acrylic, fiberglass, or PVC.  For a full listing of what the laser can and cannot engrave, please call or visit the Maker Space. The Muse costs $0.10 per minute of cutting/engraving, with most projects taking 20 minutes or less to complete. You can bring in your own materials or purchase available materials from the Maker Space.

    1. Hi Sarah. The muse does have a rotating axis to engrave rounded objects like glassware. Depending upon the material of your tumblers, you should be able to engrave them.
