Meet our September Reader of the Month – Heather!

Heather sits on a hanging chair with blue cushions holding a stack of books.

Hi! My name is Heather. I am a registered nurse in Dubuque. I have been married for 10 years and my husband and I have 2 daughters, Audrey and Paige. In my spare time I enjoy reading, biking, swimming, being with my family and watching college and professional women’s basketball. The library holds a special place in my heart. I have so many memories of going to the library as a child. We had wedding pictures taken there as well as many family pictures. Those are some of my most treasured pictures.

My favorite genre is thriller/suspense. I love when the book keeps me guessing and even better with multiple POVs. I also read historical fiction, romance, self help and in December, I hunker down with a stack of holiday books.

C-SPL September Reader of the Month Q&A :

  • What book(s) are you currently reading?
  • What is the best book you have read within the last year (or ever)?
  • What is your ideal reading environment (location, sound, snacks, etc.)
    • Ideal environment would be quiet and comfy. I love a good snack like popcorn while reading also.
  • What book are you most excited about reading next, and what about it is most exciting?
    • I am always excited for my favorite authors latest books to come out each year. Even if I didn’t enjoy last years’ book, I still give it a go. To name a few that are coming out this year; The Perfect Hosts by Heather Gudenkauf, Too Old for This by Samantha Downing, My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney and The Burning Library by Gilly Macmillan.
  • What format do you prefer and why (physical book, e-book, audiobook)?
    • I am strictly a physical book only! There is nothing like the feel and smell of a good book. I also love the suspense as I’m getting closer to finishing the book and I can feel the amount of pages left.
  • Have you discovered any exciting new authors or genres?
    • Often times I will find new authors on Goodreads or on the “advanced praises” section on books. I usually check out those authors and their books.
  • When do you decide to stop reading a book? In other words, do you read every book to the last page, or is there a moment when you decide to stop?
    • My motto is, “life is too short to read a book you don’t like” After 100 pages, if I don’t have any interest in it then I stop. A good book should keep me thinking about it even when I’m not reading it.
  • Do you remember when your love for reading began?
    • My love for reading began with my mom. I would often see her reading her books and I would grab my own and join her. I started off with Bernstein Bears books and evolved from there.

Thanks for being our September Reader of the Month, Heather! Heather’s story reminds us how books and libraries shape memories, spark passions, and bring joy at every stage of life.
