November is National Family Literacy Month – a time to celebrate the joy of reading together and the important role families play in helping children build a lifelong love of books and learning.
At Carnegie-Stout Public Library, we’re proud to support families year-round through storytimes, hands-on programs, and resources designed to help readers of every age learn, play, and grow together.
“At Carnegie-Stout, we see how powerful those little reading moments can be – whether it’s a storytime giggle, a craft project, or a child proudly showing a library card,” said Danielle Day, Youth Services Manager. “Family literacy begins with a good book that sparks a lifelong love of reading.”
Simple Ways to Read Together as a Family
Family literacy doesn’t have to mean long reading sessions – it’s about finding small, meaningful ways to connect through stories every day. Try:
-
Reading aloud at bedtime (or anytime!) and taking turns choosing books.
- Need some inspiration? Find new books on our catalog.
-
Listening to audiobooks together during car rides or quiet afternoons.
- Visit theTumbleBook Library, Hoopla Kidsor Libby Kids for tons of titles!
-
Visiting the library as a family and exploring new shelves each time.
-
Letting kids “read” to pets, toys, or siblings to build confidence and fun.
- Our monthly Reading with Rover program is a perfect time to read to friendly pups!
-
Talking about stories – what made you laugh, what surprised you, or what you might do differently than the characters.
Family Literacy Month Feature: Community Story Quilt Project
Celebrate Family Literacy Month by joining our Community Story Quilt Project!
From October 15 through November 14, families can pick up a paper quilt square and a free book at the library. Decorate your square with drawings, words, or patterns that tell your family’s story. When combined, all the squares will form a beautiful, collaborative quilt displayed in the Children’s Help Desk area.
