About Nick:
As of May 2021, I am the Director of the Carnegie-Stout Public Library. I am a Dubuque native and excited to be back home. In my spare time, I like to spend time with my children, especially reading to them. I enjoy being in the kitchen, but also dining out or enjoying an occasional classic cocktail with my wife Sophie.

Q & A:

Q. What is the best book you have read within the last year (or ever)?
A. Recently I picked up and started reading “Dubuque Folklore,” which is a book put out by American Trust & Savings Bank in 1975 to celebrate the Bicentennial of America. Much of the research was done by the Dubuqueland Vignette writers of Wahlert High School. It is an entertaining read that I have been enjoying as I’ve been resettling in to my old and new homestead.

Q. What is your ideal reading environment (location, sound, snacks, etc.)?
A. My ideal reading environment is while traveling or vacationing. I seem to be able to focus best when I’m on plane or train or sitting on a beach somewhere.

Q. What book are you most excited about reading next, and what about it is most exciting?
A. I wasn’t aware of this until I started thinking about the answers to these questions, but I’ve become aware that Patrick deWitt is working on a new novel, in which the main character is a librarian. To say that I’m excited about the book is an understatement.

Q. What book do you think more people should read, and why do you think they should read it?
A. If a story has a character that is poorly constructed, or is used too much just to move plot, I’m not as fond of that as a story that has fully-developed and wholly original characters. One of my favorite authors for character development is Patrick deWitt, I really like his humor.

Q. Do you remember when your love for reading began?
A. One of my earliest memories of absolutely loving a book was reading “Maniac Magee,” which I revisited a number of times in my youth.
